Merchant Square

History

Dating back to the 1800s, Merchant Square is housed in part of Glasgow’s Old Fruitmarket in the heart of the historic Merchant City.

Merchant City is one of Glasgow’s oldest quarters dating back to the 1750s when it was home to the warehouses of wealthy merchants who shipped tobacco, sugar and tea.

In the 19th century, the area became home to Glasgow’s central fruit, vegetable and cheese markets. Merchant Square itself is housed in part of the Old Fruitmarket.

In recent years Merchant City has enjoyed a renaissance and is home to some of the city’s most exciting independent bars, restaurants, galleries and boutiques.

Once a merchant’s market, Merchant Square is now a stylish and sophisticated destination for eating, drinking and entertainment.
